Moving watch traders from chaotic WhatsApp groups onto a searchable marketplace
2025
“The demand was already in the group chat. The product job was to keep the deals — and lose the mess.”
Background
Watch traders in Hong Kong already buy and sell every day — but they do it inside dense WhatsApp groups.
Listings flash by in seconds. Model numbers get buried under greetings, stickers, and side chats. Finding a piece again means scrolling until your thumb gives up. Missing a deal is often just missing a message while you’re offline.
Trust is personal: people enter through referrals, trade one piece at a time, and negotiate in chat. Pricing jumps between HKD, USD, and USDT. Sellers paste the same stock into multiple groups every morning just to stay visible.
WhatsApp was never built for inventory. It was built for conversation — and conversation became the warehouse, the search engine, and the CRM all at once.
That friction was the brief for WatchSmart.

What we did
We built WatchSmart — an app that moves ordering and exploring behaviour out of chat chaos and into a dedicated marketplace.
Instead of hunting through message history, traders can browse and filter stock, open a listing, and contact the seller to negotiate — the same one-piece deal rhythm they already know, without the scroll-to-death feed.
Instead of pasting photos into five groups, sellers list once. Looking-for (求貨) requests and new-item alerts close the gap WhatsApp leaves when you’re not staring at the chat.
Multi-currency display (HKD / USD / USDT) and membership entry points respect how this trade community already works — so switching feels like an upgrade, not a new religion.
“If finding, notifying, and trusting isn’t faster than the group — traders stay in WhatsApp.”

Principles of redesign
Every product decision had to beat the group chat on a job traders already do — or the migration would fail:
Model number, dial colour, and filters beat an infinite message stream. Discovery is a hunt, not a feed.
New listings and looking-for alerts must interrupt the day the way a ping in WhatsApp does — or inventory still dies quietly.
Referral culture and one-piece negotiation stay in the product. The app organises the deal; it doesn’t replace the relationship.
Sellers should upload inventory once instead of copy-pasting across groups. The platform carries the distribution work.
“Keep the deal-finding energy. Remove the chat-shaped warehouse.”

Logo design
I designed the WatchSmart wordmark and circle lockups for a trade community — sharp enough for an app icon, clear enough on a dark marketplace UI, with a candy-pink accent that feels like the watch floor, not a generic e-commerce brand.
